Christmas Market

Students and local community members turned out in force to support the Academy’s first ever Christmas market. With a host of professional stalls as well as high quality items created by students, it was a perfect opportunity for some Christmas shopping. Stall holders on the day commented on the professionalism of organisation and the attitude and helpfulness of student volunteers. Many where keen to book ahead for next year’s event.

With the Community Room transformed into an illuminated Winter Wonderland, a visit to Santa proved a magical memory in the making for many families and guests. The team of elves up in the photo suite were a formidable production line!

The huge success of the day was topped by the amount raised for the Nelson Mandela’s Children’s Hospital; £1549.69.

We are already busy planning next year’s festivities, with the possibility of extending to 40 stalls.

Stalls included items made by year 8 students on their Deep Learning Day and festive outside stalls including chocolate treats, Christmas cards and decorations, novelty lollypops and much more.

New York Trip

At October half term 2011 a group of our year 9 and 10 students enjoyed an experience which will stay with them for the rest of their lives. On 22nd October 2011 16 tired students flew out of Heathrow to arrive at the Big Apple after travelling through the night from Doncaster for their flight to JFK in their black Outwood Academy hooded jumpers. Once arrived in New York students spent the next 4 days experiencing as many delights as they could fit in. Examples of this included a Broadway show, Ground Zero, Statue of Liberty, The Empire State Building and many more. The complete contrast of life of what the students experienced is probably what will stay with them the most. The hoards of people, the history and the transport were the most surprising for the students. Overall, staff and students felt the trip was truly successful and will plans are already afoot for the 4th consecutive NYC trip.

Year 7 Holland Trip

From Ofted ….

In May 2011 I went to Holland with 14 Year 7 students to visit our partner school in Apeldoorn.  I had a fantastic time with their students and it was really interesting to see what we all had in common and what they do differently.  The thing I noticed most was how many bikes there were in the bike sheds and some of them told us that they ride 20km a day (12.5 miles) to go to school.

During the day we went to a garden party at a teacher’s house then we visited the nearby walled city of Zutphen where we did a treasure trail in mixed groups from both countries.  In the evening we had a bar-b-cue back at the school followed by an England v Holland football match, remember they were world cup finalists in 201,0 but we didn’t take it that seriously.  Dutch students learn English from an early age so it was easy for us all to communicate.

The next day we went to a traditional Dutch village with working windmills followed by a trip to their capital city, Amsterdam.  It has lots of canals and the streets are really busy but we loved it there because there was lots to do.

Sadly our time in Holland came to an end but I still had the boat journey home to look forward to because my Year 7 friends were taking me to the disco.

We all gave the trip 10 out of 10 and we are looking forward to welcoming our Dutch friends to our Academy in the autumn.

Come Dine With Me

Come Dine with Me – 2011

The Come Dine with Me event at Outwood Academy, Adwick involved a team of year 7 chef’s, waiters, waitresses and even a performer who sang to our special guests! The evening was a complete success with the year 7 kitchen staff working hard to get all the meals prepared and served on time. The students showed an abundance of independence, resilience, organisation and communication throughout the evening and during the ‘deep learning days’ with Mr. Barnston to plan the event and practice their culinary skills!

The students scored a clean run of 10/10′s from the guests to cap off the evening! Well done!
