Health & Social Care

Health and Social Care is a very popular option course. We have just moved to BTEC Level 2 in the Vertical Learning Groups after a successful year with OCR Certificate last year when 100% of the Year 11 students who took the qualification gained either the Certificate worth 4 GCSEs or the Award worth 2 GCSEs. Our first BTEC Certificate groups had an impressive success rate too with about 97% gaining the Certificate worth 2 GCSEs many of them at Merit (B) or Distinction (A/A*). Health and Social care helps students understand the issues involved in a range of care settings from nurseries to care homes for the elderly, from leisure centres to schools for people with special educational needs. It is possible to develop essential practical skills too. Two of the BTEC certificate groups gained certificates in basic first aid working with St. John’s Ambulance and all the OCR Certificates students gained a  certificate in emergency first aid.

Curriculum

Health and Social Care students cover a range of units from Communication in a Care setting to Anatomy and Physiology all of which can usefully be transferred to training in a career in the care sector.

Key Stage 4

Towards the end of Year 8, students and their parents make choices about the courses which they will follow from Year 9. As part of this personalised approach students have the option to study Health and Social Care for one year or more therefore following a different pathway. This enables the department to offer both the BTEC Certificate and the Diploma with a progression pathway to Level 3 Health and Social Care.

GCSE Results (5A*-C)

100% Pass June 2010 Y11 (2 or 4 GCSE Equivalent)

97%   Pass or better June  2010 Y9/10  (2 GCSE equivalent)

Key Stage 5

The department currently offers OCR National Diploma in Health and Social Care in Year 13 but we are now investigating the possibility of offering either or both of BTEC  Level 3 Health and Social Care or Level 3 Children’s Care, Learning and Development.

A Level Results

100% Pass or better with all students who wanted to progressing to University.
